Perched 2,000m above sea level on the curving rim of a dramatic canyon, the newly opened Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar resort provides a remarkable mountain retreat.
The resort echoes the fortified architecture of the region and features modern-day ramparts with views over mountain peaks, valleys and clouds.
Dramatic views
There are 115 guest rooms and villas overlooking either the canyon or carefully tended gardens.
The resort’s 82 Premier and Deluxe Canyon View rooms have a spacious bedroom and a spa-like bathroom complete with a rain shower and separate bath alongside a balcony.
The 33 one- or two bedroom villas feature a private infinity pool overlooking the cliffs or hidden away in the garden.
Dining options
The resort has a collection of six restaurants and lounges.
Al Maisan, meaning ‘The Rising Star’, offers live cooking stations from breakfast through to dinner, whilst Al Qalaa, ‘The Fort’, showcases inventive Omani cuisine.
Providing panoramic views across the canyon, Bella Vista serves Italian-inspired cuisine while those looking for something lighter can head to the courtyard café, Al Baha.
For a leisurely evening, guests ascend to the rooftop shisha lounge Al Shourfa or savour tapas in a Moroccan-inspired setting at Al Burj.
In the steps of royalty
Guests can also dine on a spectacular cliff-edge platform known as Diana’s Point, named after Diana, Princess of Wales, who visited the exact spot in November 1986.
A via ferrata climbing route, adjacent to the resort, allows guests to hang from the cliff as they scale its side. Other activities include mountain biking, abseiling and archery.
Nightly rates at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort start from £369 on a bed & breakfast basis in a Premier Canyon View room.
